MOOC Course to Promote Sport and Approach to Movement Among Children With Visual Impairments
About Lesson

BASIC SWIMMING TECHNIQUES

This lesson focuses on developing the front crawl and backstroke techniques in children with visual impairments, using the versatile pool noodle to enhance balance, body position, confidence, and motor coordination.

1. Seahorse Game

Purpose: To develop balance, core strength, coordination, and confidence in a playful way.

How to Play:

  • Each child sits astride a noodle like a seahorse.
  • Using both arms and legs, they swim from Point A to Point B.
  • You can turn it into a friendly race to increase motivation and excitement.

TIPS: Use a whistle or verbal cues to provide guidance and signal start/stop.

2. Front Crawl Structured Practice with the Noodle

Purpose: To progressively improve body position, kicking, arm movement, and lateral breathing.

Noodle Placement Based on Skill Focus:

Depending on the level of the child, they can place the noodles in different parts of the body.

  • Kicking Focus: Arms and elbows rest on the noodle; legs perform flutter kicks.
  • Full Stroke Practice: Arms extended in front of the head while kicking and stroking.
  • Lateral Breathing Practice: Noodle held with one hand or tucked under the armpit to facilitate side breathing.

It is important to refer to other types of ways of improving and using other materials, such as a float, a pull-buoy, or even holding a sound ball.

Teaching Techniques:

  • Tactile guidance: The instructor gently adjusts body or limb positions to correct form.
  • Verbal cues: Reinforce correct technique or provide real-time feedback (“Straighten your legs”, “Great arm pull!”).

3. Backstroke – With and Without a Noodle

Purpose: To build confidence, postural control, balance, and accurate backstroke technique.

Progression Strategy:

  1. Start with noodle support.
  2. Gradually remove support as the technique improves.

Noodle Placement Options:

  • Under the upper back and arms: Provides extra buoyancy and support.
  • Under the knees: Promotes correct leg and body position and kicking motion.
  • Wrapped around chest/back: Offers full-body support for beginners.

Technique Tips:

  1. Body Position: Keep the body flat and streamlined, with the head in a neutral position looking upward.
  2. Legs: Perform a gentle flutter kick, keeping legs straight and close together.
  3. Arms: Move arms in a straight, alternating motion, with thumbs exiting the water first and pinkies entering.
  4. Breathing: Encourage steady, relaxed breathing while focusing on smooth movements.

Key Teaching Reminders:

  • Adapt the level of difficulty based on each child’s comfort and ability.
  • Combine tactile, verbal, and auditory cues for effective guidance.
  • Always encourage exploration of different tools and techniques to boost engagement.
